Ideology - final tasks (MM52 reading)

Page 34: The World Of Mockingjay: Ideology, Dystopia And Propaganda

1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.
This article analyses dystopian representation of capitalist society in the latest hunger games movie.

2) What view of capitalist ideology is presented in the Hunger Games films?
The capitalist ideologies that are presented are that the ruling class keep the poor under control through civic means; that the poor should earn less wages just because they are in a lower class and a person who has a good amount of food is classified as rich or upper class.

3) What do the Hunger Games films suggest about the power of the media to shape and influence ideological beliefs?
The hunger games films suggests that the ideologies presented are further influenced on the media. The media reinforces these ideological beliefs such as the world or each country should be dictated by a dictator. This is done by creating different representations of the hunger games films.

Page 48: They Live - Understanding Ideology

1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.

ideologies are ideas about how things should be, and how people should behave and live their lives, an ideology. If an ideology is shared by the majority of people in a culture, as are these particular ideas,
2) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?
  • People should put their families first.
  • People should work hard for their money.
  • Women should behave in feminine
  • ways, and look after their appearance.
3) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?
In society, the dominant class control whats right or wrong and create ideologies that the lower classes have to oblige to. This show that they possess all the power in society since people act in a certain way due to ideologies created by the dominant class. Gransci defined hegemony as an important way in which those in power maintain their control through consent, rather than the use of force.

4) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?

Louis Althusser was that ideology is the greatest material power and dominates our day to day lives through two key forms of control:
Repressive state control- The government regulate social behaviour and repress the masses through violence, punitive law, and fear.
Ideological State Apparatuses- educational institutions, the family unit etc. These looser institutions control
and dominate implicitly through ‘common sense’ acceptance and social norms, rather than through fear.

the ideology of consumerism suggest suggesting the importance of the individual, and self-fulfillment.

5) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media!
I believe the rich/economic elite have the most control over what ideologies are created in the society therefore, their views and perceptions are reflected in media texts. They take advantage over less dominant people and make them see whats seen as natural or common sense, However, in my opinion, people now chose what they want to see on the media therefore, they are less likely to be influenced or controlled by these ideologies created by the dominant.

20) Representation: Feminism - Everyday Sexism & Fourth Wave MM article

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
Laura Bates started the Everyday Sexism project because she had been multiply sexually harassed about her look and her body but when she spoke about it, Everyone questioned it as if it was an ideology and wondered why shes making a fuss about it.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
The Everyday Sexism project does advocate the concept of post-feminism as she deliverers her experiences
of feminism to encourage young or old woman to own their rights and body. From this project, woman have become more overpowered since now they walk the streets with whatever they fancy with confidences and no fear. However there are some aspects where feminism is still required due to jobs being more favoured to males rather than females.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
The access to live events and interviews gave the opportunity of the Everyday Sexism project to express what they feel about post-feminism and also to encourage young females to show empowerment. Apps such as twitter, Facebook and Snapchat allowed the Everyday Sexism project to raise awareness.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
in todays society, Sexism is quiet equal however this may change due to recession or any other external shocks. In some countries, women are less acknowledged then men therefore in some parts of the world the Everyday Sexism project is still required.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
The networked feminism aims to tackle social equality issues found both on, and using, modern technology. Feminists in 2015 still deal every day with misconceptions and prejudice: the idea that rape or coercive sex may be justified if a woman is wearing provocative clothing,
2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?
The first wave mainly focuses on suffrage. the second wave was for equal rights and equal pay, the third wave is often identified as post-feminism and the fourth wave is known as the networked feminism. Yes i do agree with the fourth wave since feminism still occurs till this very day therefore using the use of modern technology encourages others to show equality amongst each other. Also it raises awareness for female rights which is needed.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?
I believe the concept of a fourth wave of feminism post-2010 is needed in today's world as it raises awareness and uses modern technology such as twitter or Snap-chat to empower post- feminism.

January assessment learner response

January assessment learner response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW
-Excellent answer to Q1 (although you go into too much detail!) You cover theories well in Q3 so clearly revised audience theory.

EBI
Revise Public Service Broadcasting!
-Q3 needs to be an extended essay explaining both sides of the debate. In fact, you write more for Q1(6 marks) than Q3( 20 marks)
- Q3 is way too simplistic: a media student needs to at least question the idea the media is dangerous. What about giving audiences some credit?

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

For question 1, i missed out one key term which was synergy and was not able to apply this key word in my answer.

For question 2. i didn't write enough points for against therefore a negative for PSB is Young people are increasingly choosing to avoid paying the licence fee so long-term future of funding model isn’t viable.

For question 4, i was unable to finish the question due to time so i missed out alot potential audience theories such as the two-step model, dependency theory and hypodermic needle model etc.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?

I didn't revise enough in my opinion which reflected on the mark i got so therefore ill rank my self on the scale at 4.

4) Look at your answer for Question 1. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
I gave more than three strategies just because i didn't know that many benefits for each one. I wrote at least one benefit and drawback for each strategy except synergy which i forgot to include in my answer.

5) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?

I was able to write how the BBC is funded and how it helps the PSB, however in my answer, i wasn't able to include something about commercial broadcasters due to lack of knowledge about the PSB as a whole.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.

An audience theory that mostly agrees on this statement is the social learning theory by bandura. In this theory is implies that the audience imitate and model what the media shows. This could have an impact on the level of aggression and violence through imitating violent movies that the media provides. Another audience theory is moral panic, this is defined as the media creating tension, worries and concerns in people's lives. For example Donald trump being president generated fear ad anxiety amongst the audience. Consequently, this will lead to damaging the people's everyday life.
