The capitalist ideologies that are presented are that the ruling class keep the poor under control through civic means; that the poor should earn less wages just because they are in a lower class and a person who has a good amount of food is classified as rich or upper class.

Page 48: They Live - Understanding Ideology

1) Read the article and summarise it in one sentence.

ideologies are ideas about how things should be, and how people should behave and live their lives, an ideology. If an ideology is shared by the majority of people in a culture, as are these particular ideas,
2) What are the four accepted ideological beliefs in western societies highlighted by the article?
  • People should put their families first.
  • People should work hard for their money.
  • Women should behave in feminine
  • ways, and look after their appearance.
3) What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?
In society, the dominant class control whats right or wrong and create ideologies that the lower classes have to oblige to. This show that they possess all the power in society since people act in a certain way due to ideologies created by the dominant class. Gransci defined hegemony as an important way in which those in power maintain their control through consent, rather than the use of force.

4) What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?

Louis Althusser was that ideology is the greatest material power and dominates our day to day lives through two key forms of control:
Repressive state control- The government regulate social behaviour and repress the masses through violence, punitive law, and fear.
Ideological State Apparatuses- educational institutions, the family unit etc. These looser institutions control
and dominate implicitly through ‘common sense’ acceptance and social norms, rather than through fear.

the ideology of consumerism suggest suggesting the importance of the individual, and self-fulfillment.

5) Do YOU agree with the idea behind They Live - that we are unthinkingly controlled by the media which is run in the interests of the economic elite? These are the big questions of A Level Media!
I believe the rich/economic elite have the most control over what ideologies are created in the society therefore, their views and perceptions are reflected in media texts. They take advantage over less dominant people and make them see whats seen as natural or common sense, However, in my opinion, people now chose what they want to see on the media therefore, they are less likely to be influenced or controlled by these ideologies created by the dominant.
